Renting Motorbikes in Dalat

Greetings all -

I%26#39;m headed to Dalat in April - has anyone rented their own motorbikes to cruise around? What%26#39;s the cost? What%26#39;s the terrain like?

Any insight is appreciated -

Tim

We rented a scooter from a woman near the central market. She charged us 50,000 VND for half a day and we bought our own benzene oil from a gas station she showed us on the map.

All the hotels will do bike rental. I stayed at the Novotel %26amp; think I paid around 50,000 for the full day.

There are some great biking routes around Dalat, out into the mountains. The roads are really good, the weather generally cool and the views are spectacular, especially if you drive up Lang Biang mountain. If you%26#39;re feeling adventurous, rent the bike for a few days %26amp; drive to Nha Trang %26amp; back. A really good route.

Thanks Everyone - this has been very helpful

Being I have not done this I have a question because of something I read here some place. Don%26#39;t you need a Vietnamese Drivers License to ride a motor bike in Vietnam. What I read said that you can go to jail for 3 years if you don%26#39;t have a license and that one from a different country is not go there.

Comments?

Technically you do need a VN Drivers Licence but that won%26#39;t stop anyone and everyone hiring you a motorbike. Don%26#39;t know about the jail aspect but knowing insurance companies, if you have an accident and need medical assistance or whatever, you won%26#39;t be covered.

I don鈥檛 know if Caucasians can have any problems with Police. I have same size same color with them so no one pays attention to me. I鈥檝e heard that with a motorbike under 50cc, you don鈥檛 need a license.

Do yourself a favour and stay or hang out at the peace hotel. All the old and original easy bike riders hang out there. They are a friendly bunch and can tell you many great passes, waterfalls and routes to take. You will also be able to hire a decent sized bike there.It%26#39;s very popular with backpackers who have been on trips with the easy riders so you can sit over a drink and hear there stories/recommendations.
