Halong Bay or Ninh Binh (Tam Coc)?

Hi there

My husband and I will be having a short trip to Vietnam mid June. We plan on spending a few days in Hanoi and would like to get out of the city for a couple of days to see another side of Vietnam in the short time we have.

We only have 2d/1n free and I am trying to decide between spending it in Ninh Binh exploring the area and Tam Coc as this area seems to be very beautiful and not very touristy yet. I am thinking it could be a good time to visit the area now while its relatively quiet.

Or doing a 2d/1n tour of Halong Bay. The Pinta Cruise interests me at this stage. There is a difference in price between the two of course and I am wondering if Halong Bay is worth the extra money.

Hi Kiwi,

We had the luxury of doing both and excuse the pun but we thought Halong Bay was a bit like sheep herding. It certainly is a beautiful site but is being way too over exploited with the number of boats and people.

On the other hand, Ninh Binh was quite relaxed, very beautiful and mixing with the locals was a treat. I even stopped for a shave on the side of the street. You would need the 2 full days to see most on offer.
