Cockroach and rat in Vietnam

Why are there so many cockroachs and rats in Vietnam? What do you think if you see a cockroach on your boat or a rat in your bathroom?

Cockroach and rat in Vietnam

Let my tell you why: Because some travelers like you just want to pay 20US$/ day while you have to pay for 150US$ + at Pennisula hotel in New York city ( and plenty of bed bugs for free there) . Comme on hoodedheifer, if you dilike VN, and in doubt about its cleanliness, just stay home or travel in the first place, dont you try to reply to me that you stayed in Caravell or Sheraton or Sofitel Metrope and still saw croach and rat there. I doubt that you can give any good comment about this country. Remember this old saying: you get what you pay for.

Cockroach and rat in Vietnam

Saw many rats in Vn in restaurants but didn%26#39;t bother me. I think the Vn eat them, I am sure I saw them hanging in markets but Plover, DanQue or others would know for sure. Don%26#39;t let it worry you, they are more afraid of you than you are of them. When you have a hot %26amp; sticky climate %26amp; not the same rubbish removal conditions etc as in the west you have to expect this. Rats in bathrooms in hotels would be rare but if you see one I suggest you upgrade your hotel. Cockroaches on boats are very common. I live in Brisbane, Australia %26amp; enjoy a tropical climate mostly so I guess we are used to cockies.

If these things really bother people then Vn maybe isn%26#39;t a destination one should choose. For mine, I loved the place warts %26amp; all....nothing fazed me at all....if it tastes good you eat it, if it doesn%26#39;t don%26#39;t....

Impulsive84848:

The Vietnamese ( And not all of them ) eat rat but only if they come from the paddy field, not the ones from the drainage%26#39; system in big cities! Yuk.

Hoodedheifer, VN is not the only place for Rats %26amp; and Cockys. I%26#39;ve worked on 5 star islands of Aus, and they all had cockys, and native rats abundent. Thailand had cockys too...... My house in Queensland Aus, is ';treated for cockys white ants etc'; and we are always finding dead ones, as Brissy posters say, its the climate!!! Can%26#39;t say I like them, but if I wanted to live in the snow, (=COLD!)then I probably wouldn%26#39;t have to deal with them so much!!!!!! I have 2x foxies, and they normally kill a mouse or rat at least 1x month somewhere in the yard...... They come in from the parks and other%26#39;s yards....... I think it%26#39;s the warmer weather, that makes them more visible, as they don%26#39;t need to shelter so much.

I can promise that we saw NO rats at our 5star accomodation The Windsor, (in Saigoon) so I guess it%26#39;s like hongLam says, you get what you pay for.

I had a prior post referring to the biggest rats ever seen at the markets....... so as to what I thought: I thought ';now that-them rats of VN sure are impressive in size- they%26#39;d give my foxies a run for their money!!!!!';

I hope it didn%26#39;t ruin your trip. But if you don%26#39;t like them, I%26#39;d suggest you cross North Queensland (Aus) off your list of possible destinations too - as they are everywhere up here!

Hi Debbie,

Yes... the vnamese eat rice field rodents... they are considered delicacy in the Mekong delta and tasted pretty much like small rabbits (I only tried roasted ones). But after a few glasses of rice wine (I%26#39;m talkin about the rocket-fuel type), everything taste like CHICKEN :)...I%26#39;ve never seen or heard if the Vnamese have ever eaten city mice.

Hi DanQue,

Guess my wording wasn%26#39;t too flash. I assumed the rats I saw at the markets were of a %26#39;pure%26#39; kind as in field caught however I did see, what I assume to be sewer rats, in a few restaurants but like I said in my previous response they didn%26#39;t bother me. Travelling through Asia %26amp; indeed tropical climates ones sees this %26amp; if you can%26#39;t accept it you probably shouldn%26#39;t be in the country in the first place.

Last time I heard from you I think you %26amp; Plover were celebrating a reunion in Saigon, about a week before I went over. Are you still there?

Cheers

Debbie

Hi Impulsive,

I am in Singapore and blasting back into VN for 5 weeks at the end of the week( I think)-----Where are you Dan Q?---lost in the Delta still?

Regarding rats and cockroaches, I have never seen VN overrun with these rodents / bugs ---certainly never in Hotels ---maybe on a boat!---As other posters have said ---we get cockroaches in plagues in northern Australia---no matter how clean , I have to have my own house sprayed at least once a year for cockies!

Only in the markets have I seen the occassional rat!---In Malaysia they get so big they eat insulation plastic!---I laughed as a friend of mine just bought a new expensive car ---rats eat the insulation in first week!-----wonders why car will not start!

And you CERTAINLY DO NOT need to stay in the Metropole to avoid them!----I do not lie but I have never seen a cockroach in any modest hotels I have stayed in!

We saw a rat in a 5* hotel running across the foyer, also in a 2* hotel, but what is really worse is my sister in law got a cockroach stuck in her ear in Sydney. YUK.

The say that in Melbourne where ever you yopu are you are no further than 10m from a rat.

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your answers. All of them make me feel very happy.

I have been to Vietnam last year in August and I stayed at 3 and 5 star hotels in Hanoi (Majestic Salute, Hanoi Flower), Hoian (Green Field), Halong Bay (Van Hai hotel) and Hue (Imperial Hotel Hue). I did not see any rat in our rooms. I also visited Halong Bay on boat but I also did not see any cockroaches. I also paid a reasonable price I think (Not a cheap price) through a travel agent which I still recommend everyone to use them.

The reason why I asked this question is I love Vietnam and I see that although Vietnamese people are poor but they are clean and their premises such as hotels, houses and boats are clean as well but why there are so many rats and cockroaches?

I have read some posts in this forum and see that some people seem tobe very disgusted by the rats and coachroaches they saw in their hotels or on their boats. This badly affects the hotels or the boats they experienced but I know it is not their fault, that is because of the climate in Vietnam or some other reasons that I would like to know.

Yes, you get what you pay for but whenever someone asks for advice or price of a boat or a tour such as Halong Bay tour, the cheapest price is mentioned first without any reference to the rats or cockroaches. So why don%26#39;t we clarify for those who want to visit Vietnam that rats and cockroaches are common in Vietnam and you%26#39;ll receive what you pay for?

I%26#39;ve seen a few rats roaming the streets in Vn cities but they are everywhere.......even in the USA, you just don%26#39;t see them. As for cockroaches....I saw more when I was there back in 71 than I did in the last 3 years I%26#39;ve visited so I think it depends on the living conditions where you are. Most of the hotels spray weekly..I have seen that. Thailand has it%26#39;s share also.
