March 3 (Bloomberg) -- Australia’s central bank left its benchmark interest rate unchanged today for the first time in seven months amid signs the lowest borrowing costs in four decades may keep the economy out of recession.

Governor Glenn Stevens kept the overnight cash rate target at 3.25 percent in Sydney. Four of 18 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News forecast today’s decision, seven expected a half- point reduction and seven tipped a quarter-point cut.

Stevens lowered the benchmark by four percentage points between September and February to try to stimulate economic growth, which may have stalled in the fourth quarter amid a global recession, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists. The governor said today the bank’s rate cuts and government spending will provide “significant support” to the economy.

“Stevens is ahead of the curve, which he deliberately wanted given the lags involved in monetary policy in the real economy,” Joshua Williamson, a senior strategist at TD Securities Ltd. in Sydney, said ahead of today’s decision. He was also reluctant to lower rates further “because of his semi- optimistic view of the Australian economy.”

The Australian dollar rose to 63.74 U.S. cents at 2:37 p.m. in Sydney from 63.45 cents just before the decision was announced. The two-year government bond yield rose 10 basis points to 2.74 percent. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point.

So sorry for late reply. I have just returned home after 2 day at PTSC Phu My - Vung Tau to take care of Diamond Princess cruise.

Tonight 1 AUD = 65.12 USD cents at 09:43 PM HCMC time March 11 2009

Today 1 AUD = 11.255 VND

So sorry I have not checked at the jewelry store

Yah! I have been watching it rise very slowly....we are coming in April/May...hoping it will go higher by that time!

65 cents in the dollar is nothing to get excited about. This time last year we were getting 97 cents to the dollar.

It will be up and down for a while yet.

Lets hope for the best.
