You shouldnt need any vnd before leaving the airport.

Jewellery shops give the best exchange rates.

If you have a few small US dollars they are always handy especially for tips.

If you are desparate the hotels will change money, we have never had a problem in 3 visits, usually have Aussie dollars, a bit of left over US, and a debit card.

Hi Mima,

If you are being picked up at the airport, you do not need VND until you get to town, There is an exchange booth at the airport but the rates are unfavourable.

Once you are in your hotel, there are 2 places to change money at good rates ( until you find your '; sea legs';).

. There is a big Bureau of Exchange in Le Loi street ( between Nguyen Street and Dong Khoi streets----number 4 , I think----its easy to find).

. The ground floor of the TAX department store ( cnr Le Loi / Nguyen Hue Street opposite the Rex Hotel) has a big exchange centre.

Both of these places are right in the very centre of town and have high volume turnover and the rates are very good!

You can do better, but the difference is only marginal.

Happy travelling

Thanks a lot Plover, that was the sort of detailed information that I was hoping for.

You are not far from me a we are in Nambour for the past 20+ years.

Last year I did a 3week stint in Surigao/Mindanao and another 3 weeks in Jakarta and Nias.

As a 73 yr old I was stranded and overwhelmed so on this 3 week trip I am taking my wife but doing it with an organised tour out of Aus.

We fly into Hanoi then off to Sapa back to Hanoi then trip down the coast by plane and bus then into HCMC and fly out Saturday March 28th.

Any tips you can provide will be appreciated.

Hi again, Mima,

I am so sorry!----I did not read your post properly ---these places I mentioned are in HCMC, not Hanoi. I would go to the ANZ bank, right in the centre of the Old Quarter ( or Vietcombank)--

Apologies!

I am still looking for places in HANOI for best exchange rates of the Aussie Dolloar
