Price for Iphone in America or Australia

I am looking for an iphone 3G , but it is very expensive in Vietnam - the price seems to be three times as much as you get in USA or Australia.

I read that the iPhone can only be purchased with a 2-yr commitment and a monthly package with AT%26amp;T. But is there any way that you can buy the phone itself only ?

I intend to have someone on this forum to get one %26amp; bring it to Vietnam for me.
